Nurse educator first to receive NY Times award

Tracey GaslinUofL nursing professor Tracey Gaslin will be the first nurse educator to receive the New York Times Job Market "Tribute to Nurses" Award, given to honor outstanding patient care and excellence in nursing education. Gaslin's research focuses on issues faced by children with hemophilia, cancer and other diseases that require infusion therapy.

UofL, Chinese students exhibit digital self portraits

student artworkA Chinese-American professor at UofL and an American professor in China had their fine arts students create digital self portraits exploring issues of self and soul. The introspective results are displayed in simultaneous shows in Rouge Noir, the downtown student art gallery of UofL's Allen R. Hite Art Institute, and in Zhaoqing University in China. The UofL exhibit runs through December at Rouge Noir, 333 E. Market St., Louisville.

Team conducts third hand transplant

team of doctorsA 54-year-old Michigan man became the third person to undergo a hand transplant at Jewish Hospital in Louisville and the first to receive treatment with only two anti-rejection drugs. Normally three drugs are necessary. David Savage lost his dominant right hand in a work-related accident more than 30 years ago. Physicians from Jewish Hospital; Kleinert, Kutz Hand Care and UofL worked 16 hours Nov. 29 to attach the donor hand.

Grawemeyer Award winners announced

The 2007 Grawemeyer Award winners include an international affairs expert who believes NATO needs to "go big or get out" to solve the Afghanistan problem; Italian scientists who study mirror neurons; an educator who advocates student collaboration; and a scholar whose memoir analyzes the social and spiritual effects of a racially motivated murder in North Carolina.

Libraries' dean shares love of chocolate

Hannelore RaderUofL Libraries dean Hannelore Rader is a self-confessed chocoholic. So much that she bakes sweets for her staff and students - usually involving chocolate - every day. Rader's interest in feeding others is partly a result of her childhood. She grew up in East Germany under the Russian occupation. "I think it's making up for my growing up under difficult circumstances when many people went hungry," she says.

Diabetes research lab named for Barnstable Brown

Derby tradition mingled with biomedical research Nov. 6 as UofL dedicated a new diabetes research lab on its downtown Health Sciences Campus. The Barnstable Brown Research Laboratory, part of UofL’s Institute for Cellular Therapeutics, was named to honor the Barnstable Brown Foundation, which raises funds for diabetes research through its famed Kentucky Derby party.

Cardinals and Wildcats face off at Freedom Hall

On Dec. 3 the women's basketball Cardinals topped the UK Wildcats 83-75 in front of a record 12,342 fans at Freedom Hall. The Cardinals' third straight win against the University of Kentucky upped their record to 8-0, the best start in school history. Now it's the Cardinal men's turn. The traditional rivals will battle it out in Louisville Saturday, Dec. 16, 1:30 p.m. tipoff.

Faculty and staff give $334,530 to community

Faculty, staff and retirees donated $334,530 through UofL Cares, an employee giving campaign. The campaign raises money for four organizations that make a difference in the Louisville Metro community: Metro United Way, Fund for the Arts, WHAS Crusade for Children and UofL. The goal was $300,000.

UofL ceramics students and faculty members will offer handcrafted functional and art objects in their annual holiday sale Dec. 8, 8 a.m.-6 p.m. and Dec. 9, 10 a.m.-2 p.m., Room 136, HPES Building, (corner of Floyd and Warnock streets), Belknap Campus.

Parkway Field bricks
Parkway Field hosted great sports icons such as Pee Wee Reese, Joe DiMaggio and Babe Ruth. The field's wall was razed in 2004 but a limited number of outfield bricks have been beautifully preserved and can be yours. Proceeds from the $250 purchase benefit UofL beautification projects.

Garden of Hope
Honor someone special in your life with a brick in the James Graham Brown Cancer Center's Garden of Hope. Bricks are $100 and can be engraved in honor of an individual or family.

Ray Harm Cardinal prints
The UofL Alumni Association is selling limited edition cardinal prints by famed Kentucky wildlife artist Ray Harm. $125 plus tax and shipping. Proceeds benefit the Brown Cancer Center and UofL Alumni Association scholarships.
