One of jazz's top trombonists will headline U of L's Jazz Week 2006, Feb. 23-26. Grammy
Award nominee Bill Watrous has played with top artists including Quincy Jones and Count Basie
and was voted best trombonist in Downbeat magazine's readers' poll seven years in a row. Also
slated to appear are National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Master Jon Hendricks and Grammy-nominated
saxophone player David Liebman. Along with playing concerts, Jazz Week artists and others will
conduct free workshops for U of L students and the public. More information is available at

Middle Ages and Renaissance musical instruments such as the sackbut, krumhorn and lizard still have
a place in a world increasingly dominated by MP3 files, computer chips and synthesizers, thanks
to musicians like Jack Ashworth and his early music students at U of L. A virtuoso on dozens of
antique instruments, Ashworth specializes in music dating from roughly 900 to the early 1700s.
Wednesday, Feb. 1 was the first day for schools to sign student-athletes
to National Letters of Intent. Profiles for each of the Cardinals' signees
are now available online as well as audio from head coach Bobby Petrino's
press conference.
Following the most impressive showing of the indoor season at last week's
Indiana Open, the U of L men's and women's track and field team will
return to action on Friday, Feb. 3 and Saturday, Feb. 4 at the Meyo Invitational
hosted by Notre Dame at the Loftus Sports Center in South Bend, Ind. U of L
enters the Meyo Invitational, which is set to begin at 5 p.m. on Friday,

Could learning more about the way animals fight help us better understand
hardball tactics in the corporate boardroom?
Maybe, according to Lee Dugatkin, professor and distinguished scholar of
biology at U of L. Dugatkin, who has written dozens of articles for academic
journals on the evolution of animals' social behavior, also has been quoted
on the topic in National Geographic, Smithsonian magazine and other publications.
