Alumnus cracks da Vinci

researchers Leonardo da Vinci expert Matthew Landrus '90A, '98GA recently had his book "The Treasures of Leonardo da Vinci" published, which partially recaps Landrus' research on the famous Renaissance man. The book tells the story of the Leonardo's life and times and looks at the major themes that dominated his work. So what does a man with such a world-class knowledge of Leonardo think of "The Da Vinci Code"? Find out.

Brohm and Bush On Watch List for Top Award

Andre BlackQuarterback Brian Brohm and running back Michael Bush were named to the Maxwell Award, annually presented to the collegiate player of the year. The award watch list is comprised of 60 candidates compiled by the Maxwell Football Club Advisory Committee. Twelve semifinalists for each award will be announced in October, and the field will be trimmed to three in November. The winner will be announced in December 2006.

Brown Cancer Center opens 15 melanoma trials

According to the American Cancer Society, melanoma is the most deadly form of skin cancer, causing more than 40,000 deaths every year. Researchers at U of L’s James Graham Brown Cancer Center have opened 15 clinical trials treating patients with melanoma. Multimedia format

Music student scores big

researchers An independent movie that collected a gold medal at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Student Academy Awards in June featured an original score by music major Brad Ritchie. Filmmaker Sam Day credited Ritchie’s score for helping make the film a success. “He definitely deserves a lot of credit,” Day said. “We wouldn’t have won without his music.” The 70-piece University Orchestra performed and recorded the score.

Camp teaches social skills to children with autism

Andre Black For 16 children with autism, a summer camp in June was about more than fun and games. It also was about learning social skills, such as making eye contact, listening and engaging in conversation. Camp SS (Social Skills) STAR was offered by the Systematic Treatment for Autism and Related Disorders (STAR) program at U of L's Weisskopf Child Evaluation Center and funded with a gift from The Woman’s Club of Louisville.

Physiologist wins Fulbright to study African herbs

Physiologist Ayotunde Adeagbo has won a Fulbright award to teach and study herbal medicine in Nigeria this fall. He will return to his native country to teach and conduct research on two plants used in African cultures to treat high blood pressure and diabetes. Scientists already have isolated an anti-malarial compound from one of the plants. “I developed an interest in plant-based drugs after my mother had a stroke several years ago and was successfully treated with some of these traditional remedies,” Adeagbo says.
