Researchers Study Effects of Joint Replacement

researcher An estimated eight million women in the United States who suffer from bone loss due to osteoporosis will need total joint replacements--sometimes more than once. U of L researchers study the "micro-architecture" of bone to find out when and how it loses its strength as well as how the bone reacts to total joint replacements.

Art Program to Expand with Cressman Center

Elizabeth Cressman A U of L planned art center downtown should boost Louisville's reputation as a haven for exciting sculpture art. Once completed, the Cressman Center for Visual Arts will house U of L's glass and sculpture programs and provide U of L art students a laboratory to create three-dimensional art in glass, wood and metal. Retired physicians and art collectors Frederick and Elizabeth Cressman have committed $1 million to launch the center.

Russian Jazz Musicians Visit U of L, Bridge Cultures

jazz musicians Four play nightclubs and concert halls in St. Petersburg. Another plays jazz piano in Moscow. The five Russian musicians comprise the Open World Quintet, and they recently visited U of L during Jazz Week in February. While visiting the university they performed and got a taste of the city's music and cultural scene, as well as the School of Music's jazz education offerings.

McMahon Named Outside Linebackers Coach

Tom McMahon Tom McMahon has been named the new special teams coordinator and outside linebackers coach at U of L. McMahon has been with the Utah State program for 11 years, serving eight of those years as assistant coach--the fourth-longest tenure as an assistant in the school's history.

Expansion Brings More to Ekstrom Library

The eagerly awaited 42,500-square-foot addition to U of L's Ekstrom Library opened to students and the public during a ceremony on Feb. 20. The annex allows more space for a library bursting at the seams and provides quicker access to materials and more study opportunities. Students now have a secure 24-hour study area, and an automated book retrieval storage system--one of just seven of its kind in the nation.
