Belknap Research Building Opens for High-Tech Studies
A major research building that includes the largest clean room in Kentucky for fabricating
tiny high-tech devices was dedicated on campus in April. The 117,000-square-foot Belknap
Research Building is designed to promote multidisciplinary research projects by more than
40 scientists. Federal earmarks of $7.7 million secured by Sen. Mitch McConnell helped pave
the way for the completion of the clean room.

Hagerty Receives 2006 Trustees Award
Joe Hagerty's association with U of L began more than 50 years ago when he and friends played
touch football on Belknap Campus. Now the U of L alumnus and 36-year faculty member in the
J.B. Speed School of Engineering has been recognized for his lifelong excellence in teaching.
He recently received the 2006 U of L Trustees Award.
Grawemeyer Winners Bring Great Ideas to Campus
Lynn Nadel and John O'Keefe challenged traditional notions about human memory.
Now their findings are being used to better understand Alzheimer's disease
and more. They, along with Lee Shulman (Education), Fiona Terry (World Order),
Marilynne Robinson (Religion), and Gyorgy Kurtag (Music Composition), are
among this year's recipients of the Grawemeyer Award, which honors outstanding
ideas.
Information Security Program Recognized for Excellence by National Security Agency
U of L is now a nationally recognized center in the training of experts
to combat threats to the nation's computers. The National Security Agency
and the Department of Homeland Security recently named the university's information
security program a National Center of Academic Excellence in Information
Assurance Education.
Three Cardinals Drafted on Second Day of NFL Draft
Senior defensive end Elvis Dumervil, linebacker Brandon Johnson and defensive tackle
Montavious Stanley of the U of L football team were drafted on the second day in the National
Football League Draft on Sunday. Dumervil was the 29th selection in the fourth round and the
126th player taken overall by the Denver Broncos. Johnson was the ninth pick in the fifth
round and the 142nd overall selection by the Arizona Cardinals, and Stanley was the
13th pick in the sixth round and the 182nd overall by the Dallas Cowboys.
Racetrack Workers Receive Care from Health Students
They exercise and groom horses, clean stables and do countless other chores.
They are the racetrack backside workers. A new health center near Churchill
Downs is helping them get needed medical attention. The center is a partnership
between U of L and a non-profit racing foundation.
U of L nursing and nurse practitioner students as well as medical
students render the care, gaining experience while providing a previously unavailable
service.
'True Gentleman' Hurst Juggles Hectic Student Career
He and his brother once juggled knives and torches inches from Kentucky's governor.
Now U of L Speed School student Brent Hurst is juggling an academic, community service and
personal schedule that would be the envy of any type-A CEO. Hurst's good works and involvement
as a fraternity president have earned him a top national fraternity honor--True Gentleman of
the Year from Sigma Alpha Epsilon.
