Low-income Kentucky students to receive free tuition

This week President James Ramsey announced the Cardinal Covenant, a promise to help students from low-income families graduate debt-free. It is targeted to the 22.6 percent of Kentucky families who live at or below 150 percent of the federal poverty line. Eligible students will have tuition, room, board and books paid for until they graduate as long as they meet all program rules. The program is the first of its kind in Kentucky.

Kragthorpe Chosen to Lead Cardinals Football

KragthorpeSteve Kragthorpe, the former head coach at Tulsa University and the architect of one the nation's most heralded rebuilding efforts, has been named the 20th head football coach at UofL. Kragthorpe was formally introduced at a press conference Tuesday in the press lounge at U of L's Papa John's Cardinal Stadium. Kragthorpe takes over for Bobby Petrino, who was named the head coach of the Atlanta Falcons on Monday and ended his U of L tenure with a 41-9 record.

Amobi and Chace: Friendship is strong medicine

AmobiChace Recktenwald was having a tough time. It was September 2005 and, just four days earlier, the Louisville 6-year-old had undergone surgery to correct an abnormality of his brain stem. The operation was a success, but Chace was struggling with pain and a long hospital stay. That changed when UofL defensive end Amobi Okoye paid him a visit.

School of Music to host concert at Carnegie Hall

Music HallThe UofL Symphony Orchestra and Wind Ensemble will headline a special Grawemeyer Award concert at New York's Carnegie Hall Thursday, March 8. They will perform works of previous winners of the UofL Grawemeyer Award for Music Composition. The 2007 recipient of the $200,000 award also will be announced. Concert tickets are available through the School of Music, 502-852-6907 or as part of a travel plan option coordinated through Music Travel Consultants (make reservations by Jan. 15).

Outstanding student realizes deferred dream

TraceyBlindness didn't discourage Tracey Frazier from becoming a lawyer. The advice of others did, but only for a while. It's too difficult -- set more realistic goals, they told her. "I can't wait to tell them they were wrong," said Frazier, Brandeis School of Law outstanding fall semester graduate and student speaker at UofL's winter commencement.

Chen named dean of Brandeis School of Law

Nationally recognized legal scholar Jim Chen has been named the new dean of the Brandeis School of Law. His expertise includes law and technology, law and science, environmental law, agricultural law, telecommunications, regulatory law and policy, statutory interpretation and constitutional law.
