News and Updates from U of L

U of L Receives $11.7 Million to Fight Heart Attack Damage
Can the heart protect itself from heart-attack damage? That's the question being tackled in a University of Louisville research project led by cardiologist Roberto Bolli, who has earned an $11.7 million grant from the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, a subgroup of the National Institutes of Health. The grant is the largest nationally-competitive NIH award in U of L's history.

Entrepreneurial System Attracts $2 Million Grant
The farm system used by America's favorite pastime inspired a U of L business professor to create a new system for helping entrepreneurs. The effectiveness of that baseball-inspired entrepreneurial development system is earning raves and has netted a $2 million grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation.
Thomas S. Lyons, the Fifth Third Bank professor of community development in U of L's College of Business, developed the system with a consulting firm colleague. They are deploying the system in parts of West Virginia, Kentucky and Ohio as part of The Advantage Valley Entrepreneurship Development System Collaborative.

Mini-Baja 100 West Competition

U of L Finishes High at SAE Mini-Baja 100 West
The dust swirled in the desert air as 130 mini baja teams raced for glory at the Society of Automotive Engineers' Mini-Baja 100 West competition recently in Tucson, Ariz. U of L's two Mini-Baja cars, maintained and raced by mechanical engineering students from the J.B. Speed School of Engineering, made their most impressive showings in competition to date. They finished 9th and 22nd, respectively, in the international field. "It's taken a few years for us to get to this level of competitiveness, but each student team has built on the experience of the others," says the teams's faculty advisor Keith Sharp, a mechanical engineering professor. "We're starting to get a good reputation and expect to continue to improve."
