Businesses Turn to U of L to Save Energy Costs
Gulf States Paper Corp., maker of boxes of Little Debbie snack
cakes, Kellogg's cereals and more, wanted to know how to reduce
energy costs at its Nicholasville, Ky. plant. So it turned
to the experts at the Kentucky Pollution Prevention Center (KPPC)
in U of L's J. B. Speed School of Engineering. Among
may KPPC suggestions the plant is implementing is the replacement
of old light bulbs with lesser-wattage versions. "When all
the bulbs are replaced we estimate we'll save about 65,000 kilowatt
hours per year, or $5,000," says plant environmental coordinator
Chris Denham.

E-Days Brings Engineering Excitement to Students, Visitors

it was air conditioning. In 1936, a Ford V8. In 1939, a TV. In
1955, a telephone answering machine. Louisville got its first glimpse

annual Engineers’ Days events. Today, E-Days is still a showcase
for new science in bioengineering, robotics and more. It also is
a fun-filled event for high school students and other visitors.
This year’s array of tours, contests,
prizes, corporate exhibits and competitive research displays by U
of L engineering students will be under way Feb. 20-21. For more
information, call the Speed School Student Council office, 502-852-6301,
