Barely Visible Tacks Could Aid Eyesight
Dust in the eye can be annoying,
but U of L bioengineer Scott Cambron’s dust-sized titanium tacks could
be just what some visually challenged people need. Cambron is part
of a U of L team of medical scientists and engineers working with
researchers at Harvard University on retinal implants to improve
vision. Cambron’s
tacks will be used by researchers to
attach retinal implants to the back of a patient's eye.
U of L Unveils First Edition of 'Moby-Dick'
In her acclaimed 1999
bestseller Ahab’s Wife, U of L English
professor and Kentucky poet laureate Sena Naslund contemplated
how the spouse of Captain Ahab from Herman Melville’s
novel Moby-Dick might have lived. Now U of L has acquired
a rare first-edition copy of Moby-Dick. The
announcement of the book’s acquisition in April is part
of a series of events celebrating University Libraries, including
the impending attainment of a 2 millionth volume and completion
of a major facility expansion.

Connie Neal Wins Wilma Rudolph Award
The University of Louisville's Connie Neal was the
N4A Wilma Rudolph Student Athlete Achievement Award winner.
The award honors student athletes who have overcome great
personal, academic or emotional odds to achieve academic
success while participating in intercollegiate athletics.
Neal saw action in all 30 games for the Cardinals. She finished
the year averaging 4.3 points and 2.0 rebounds per game.

7 - Several alumni clubs around the country are hosting

May 12-14 - The class of 1955 will celebrate its
50th reunion. Golden alumni are invited to enjoy campus tours,
breakfasts hosted by schools and colleges, a cocktail reception

May 26 - Louisville Bats U of L Alumni Association Day will
begin at 5:30 p.m. at Slugger Field. Cost per person is $5.
June 4 - Annual Alumni Day at the Races gets
under way when the gates open at 11:30 a.m. at Churchill Downs. First call to
the post is at 1:15 p.m. Guests will have reserved seating on the sixth floor
of the Skye Terrace. Tickets are $21 each and include a buffet lunch.
June 25 - Whitewater rafting at the Lower River
Gorge in West Virginia promises to be a wild ride. The special alumni
and friends discount price of $99 per person includes a day of
rafting, lunch and buffet dinner. Space is limited, so RSVP today.

U of L Finance
Students Earn Top Investing Award
A team of finance students
turned $50,000 into $58,519, a 17-percent return, and won
the 2005 Student Investment Fund competition, sponsored
by Stern, Agee & Leech,
a Birmingham-based investment banking firm. U of L competed
against business students from Alabama, Auburn, Georgia
and Mississippi over a seven-month period. While the U
of L team was showing a 17.04-percent return, the Dow Jones
Industrial Average increased only 3.74 percent.

Hutchinson to Return as Acting Dean of Dental School
University
Provost Shirley Willihnganz turned to a familiar face when looking
for an acting dean for the School of Dentistry . Willihnganz announced
April 7 that Rowland Hutchinson, former dean of the school, will
serve as acting dean beginning in May. Hutchinson will replace
John Williams, who is leaving to become dean of the dental school
at the University of North Carolina.
Duo Selected to Compete in NCAA Golf Championship
Louisville's Adrienne
White and Meghan Little were selected to participate in the 2005
NCAA Division I Women's Golf Championships Regionals. This marks
the first time in school history that two U of L athletes were
selected for this NCAA Championship field. White and Little will
compete in the East regional, which will be played May 5-7 at
the University of Florida Golf Course, Gainesville, Fla.
