President Jim Ramsey is proud of UofL's record of accountability -- not only how the university trains students to become leaders, but how it spends tax and tuition dollars wisely, protects and improves the environment, creates community partnerships, supports cultural and artistic endeavors, helps businesses succeed, builds healthier communities and promotes research and medical breakthroughs. "UofL's good citizenship helps all Kentuckians, saves millions of dollars and improves education," he says. "That's part of what we mean by accountability."
Astronauts endure rigorous training before they climb in a space shuttle for a mission. But NASA wants to be prepared in case something goes wrong. The space agency has enlisted UofL researchers to find ways to treat heart attacks in a weightless environment. "You have to understand the physics present in weightlessness. You have to understand the physiology of a chest compression, which is to try to generate blood flow into circulation," says Dr. George Pantalos, a professor of surgery and bioengineering. A UofL team's findings could lead to the creation of more effective vaccines for many diseases, and with fewer side effects than many currently on the market. The team's results, published June 14 in Science magazine, show how one vaccine additive promotes stronger immunity -- and without toxic side effects -- than the vaccine alone.
Remember how intense your first week at the University of Louisville was: Meeting new friends, registering for classes, learning the C-A-R-D-S cheer, eating in cafeterias and trying not to get lost? UofL's newest students are blogging about their experiences at freshman orientation, a two-day, overnight stay that introduces them to campus culture, resources and academics.
For single parents who are homeless or at risk for being homeless, earning a college degree is typically impossible -- even though it is their best hope for getting their families out of poverty. To assist these parents, UofL is helping Project Women build affordable housing and provide counseling and on-site child care for parents who are pursuing a college degree. The Louisville Scholar House, to be located half a block north of UofL's Belknap Campus, will also offer child care for UofL students, faculty and staff. The facility will open fall 2008.
The discovery of a 65-million-year-old fossil in Mongolia offers new evidence that mammals began to thrive only after the dinosaurs died off. The find contradicts recent studies suggesting that mammals originated as long as 129 million years ago and lived alongside dinosaurs, says Guillermo Rougier, a UofL paleontologist who found the fossil. A study about the discovery appeared in the June 21 issue of the journal Nature.
Thanks to the efforts of UofL's Office of Information Technology, a connection point to the most advanced Internet network in the country is coming to Kentucky -- and that's huge news for education, research and economic development in the state. NewNet is the latest version of Internet2, a noncommercial, high-bandwidth Internet that will improve the technology infrastructure for Kentucky schools, from Kindergarten through graduate school.
Just a few miles from UofL's campus, 36 percent of residents live below the poverty line and just 64 percent older than age 24 are high school graduates. To many, these issues may seem insurmountable. But to Dan Hall with UofL's Signature Partnership, it's an opportunity waiting to happen. Launched this year, the Signature Partnership is a coalition of community organizations, programs and initiatives that seek to improve quality of life for west Louisville residents. It focuses on education, economic development, social and human services and health, and all of UofL's academic units have ties to at least one program.
Marcia Hern, dean of Texas Woman's University's College of Nursing, has been selected dean of the UofL School of Nursing. Hern will assume the post on or before Oct. 1, pending approval by the School of Nursing faculty and UofL's Board of Trustees. Hern is a clinical nurse specialist in pediatric nursing and professor of nursing, whose research focuses on adolescent and youth health promotion and risk-taking behaviors, including genetic risk information and issues in nursing education and nursing leadership.
