The tulips are in bloom at Churchill Downs, wide-brimmed hats have cropped up in stores and Queen Elizabeth has confirmed her attendance at the 133rd Kentucky Derby, May 5. It's Derby time in Louisville!
After being absent from Derby activities for more than a decade, the UofL balloon returned to the Kentucky Derby Festival on April 28 for the Great Balloon Race. To celebrate the occasion, UofL Alumni Association staff members handed out lapel pins to fans who gathered near the balloon. Alas, the balloon was more successful on the ground than in the competition. The ReMax balloon won the race; the UofL balloon didn't crack the top five.

Organizations throughout Louisville use Derby to raise money for charities. Three charitable fundraisers directly support UofL: The Barnstable Brown Gala supports diabetes research, the Derby Festival helps kids with autism and the Mint Jubilee raises money for UofL's James Graham Brown Cancer Center.
Parkinson's disease is something that John Swarts (left), project manager for
global products at GE, knows all too much about. He has battled the disease for
several years. "It is a 'quiet disease,'" he says. "It quiets those of us who
have it, and it's not talked about much. We want to change that." Swarts and
other members of the Parkinson Support Center of Kentuckiana certainly did that
when they announced a $650,000 gift to UofL's Movement Disorder Program.
The gift qualifies for $500,000 in "Bucks for Brains" state
matching monies.
Autism and related disorders are more common than previously thought, a U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention study reported earlier this year. That issue is one of many that will be discussed at a June 20-22 conference at Louisville's Galt House that is geared toward educators, psychologists, family members and others who help people with autism. Cost is $195 for professionals and educators and $80 for family members, instructional assistants and full-time students.

A new medical laboratory in Owensboro, Ky., the Mitchell Memorial Cancer Center, opened its doors to the public yesterday to show how plant sources -- including tobacco -- can be used in the development of new medicines. UofL's James Graham Brown Cancer Center is partnering with the center to seek new, cost-effective ways to develop vaccines and conduct cancer research. Two UofL researchers are working on a second-generation cervical cancer vaccine that will be grown in tobacco plants.
UofL graphic design students recently got a dress rehearsal for the real world
at the fifth annual Portfolio Day. Seventeen students completing bachelor of
fine arts degrees in communication art and design exhibited their work for design
professionals at the Cressman Center for Visual Arts. "While the review is not
a 'job fair,' we have had a number of students who get interviews and subsequent
job offers based on the Portfolio Day exposure," said Leslie Friesen, UofL's
Power Creative Designer-in-Residence.
