Philanthropy in action
Louisville-based Papa John's and founder John Schnatter and his wife, Annette, have committed $10 million toward the expansion of Papa John's Cardinal Stadium, home of the Cardinal football team. The gift, announced last week, is the largest single gift ever made to UofL Athletics and brings the total UofL support by Papa John's and the Schnatters over the last 10 years to more than $20 million. With the expansion, stadium seating will increase from 42,000 to about 63,000.
Outstanding alumnus
A UofL graduate's music will be televised internationally as athletes enter China's immense 100,000-seat Beijing National Stadium for the opening ceremonies of the 2008 Olympic Games. Zhiyi Wang, a 2006 graduate of UofL's School of Music, will assist the music director of the Olympics' opening ceremonies in composing and orchestrating music. After graduating, the 27-year-old was appointed composer-in-residence at the Shanghai Opera House.
Accountability
UofL's 2,600-strong freshman class is the most academically gifted in UofL's history, with an average ACT score of 24.3, compared to the state's and nation's average of 20.7 and 21.2, respectively. A record number of our new freshmen -- more than 700 -- had ACT scores of 27 or higher. UofL President James Ramsey discusses UofL students and their future impact on Kentucky.
Student excellence
UofL quarterback and Heisman Trophy contender Brian Brohm is on track to get a business degree in December -- joining his brothers, sister and dad as UofL College of Business graduates. The Louisville native could have played college football anywhere, but he wanted to play for UofL -- the team for which his dad and older brothers played. More than that, he wanted to help make UofL a winner and national contender, and he has.
Research achievement
UofL's Movement Disorders Program has been designated a National Parkinson Foundation Center of Excellence -- the first and only program to receive this designation in Kentucky. The highest designation offered by the foundation, it honors centers that provide outstanding comprehensive care for Parkinson disease patients and engage in research and community outreach. An estimated 4,000 people in the Louisville Metro area have Parkinson disease and more than 42,000 suffer from movement disorders, says Director Irene Litvan, M.D. (left).
Alumni services
The UofL Alumni Association is hosting a variety of fall events -- ranging from a scavenger hunt at Louisville's Gallery Hop on Sept. 7 to game-watch parties and UofL Night at Actor's Theatre. And don't miss $1 hotdogs and drinks, a rock climbing wall, games for the kids and music at the Liberty Mutual UofL Alumni Association Tailgate Central on home weeknight games. Regional clubs throughout the nation host alumni events too, from New York to L.A. and Chicago to Houston. Full calendar
Research achievement
In August, UofL received a $4.4 million grant from the National Institutes of Health to create a Center for Environmental Genomics and Integrative Biology. The center, one of only 22 NIH-designated environmental health centers nationwide, will study the interaction between genes and environmental factors that negatively impact human health, whether through disease or through developmental problems.
Student excellence
This fall UofL opera students are teaming with students from a Polish conservatory to perform Mozart's Marriage of Figaro. Although separated by an ocean, students from the UofL Opera Theatre Program and the Karol Szymanowski Academy of Music in Katowice, Poland, have been anticipating the performance since they started planning for it in 2005. In November the Polish students will join UofL students on the stage at Louisville's Kentucky Center, and in January, UofL students will travel to Poland.
Community partnerships
More than 100 sculptures by artist Frederick Hart will be on display Sept. 6-Nov. 17 at various UofL locations, including Grawemeyer Hall, the Hite Art Institute, Ekstrom Library and the downtown Cressman Center for Visual Arts. And many UofL faculty and area teachers will be incorporating the artwork into their classrooms, using the artwork to promote student discussions about art history and the creative process.
Student excellence
Student Government Association President Brian Hoffman thinks this is an exciting time to be a UofL Cardinal. The senior from northern Kentucky is majoring in economics and political science. After graduating in May, Hoffman plans to spend a year abroad in Southeast Asia earning a master's degree in international relations as a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar. He says one of his primary goals as SGA president is to "revolutionize student government at UofL" by focusing on student involvement and outreach.
Community partnerships
