Future life sciences center to take shape under new program

UofL President James R. Ramsey and others announced the creation of NUCLEUS, an initiative to pull together key aspects of a$2.3 billion life sciences master plan--which includes UofL's health sciences campus. The life sciences research park is planned on the former Haymarket property at Jefferson and Preston Streets in downtown Louisville.

 
 
 
 

Walz and McCoughtry receive national honors

The Louisville women's basketball program capped off its stellar season with a pair of postseason awards. Head coach Jeff Walz was named the Maggie Dixon Rookie Coach of the Year. This distinguished award honors a first-year WBCA Division I head coach who has led his or her team to a successful season. Also, junior forward Angel McCoughtry is the WBCA National Player of the Month.

 
 
 
 

Champions of autism: Brothers to speak at April 4 rally

Champions of autism

Brothers Cameron and Jordan Blackwell, who both have autism spectrum disorders, will speak at the UofL Autism Awareness Rally at noon this Friday, April 4 at the Galt House East, Fourth Street at the river, Ballroom C, second floor (this is a new location). They bring firsthand experience to their cause, and together, work hard to dispel myths autism.

 
 
 
 

Alumni Association seeking board nominations

The UofL Alumni Association is seeking nominations for its board of directors. Members serve three-year terms and administer the business and operations of the association. To submit a nomination, summarize the nominee's current work experience, community service and why you believe this person should be considered. Brohm receives first BIG EAST leadership award

UofL Basketball

UofL alumnus Brian Brohm, an academic all-American off the field and a record-setting quarterback on the field, has been named the winner of the first BIG EAST Conference/Aéropostale Leadership Award. The award will be presented annually to a BIG EAST scholar-athlete who has demonstrated leadership qualities during his or her undergraduate career, while also excelling on the playing field and in the classroom.

 
 
 
 

Recreational sports and fitness facilities for alumni

UofL alumni can purchase membership to UofL fitness facilities and join recreational sports for just $175 a year. Members have access to the Student Activities Center, Humana Gym and Cardinal Corner Game Room. The SAC contains a weight and fitness area, racquetball and squash courts, basketball courts and a group fitness room. The Humana Gym has the same weight and fitness equipment and features 100 free parking spots. Family members can be added to the plan for a nominal fee.

 
 
 
 

UofL team determines gender of science center’s mummy

A UofL research team recently helped the Louisville Science Center learn more about an old friend--a 2,600-year-old friend. The mummy called Then-Hotep has been one of the most popular attractions at the science center and its forerunner, the Natural History Museum, since the early part of the last century. But throughout all of those years, it kept one big secret: Nobody knew its gender. Until now.

 
 
 
 

Design students show others how to use 'green'

Being a student in the UofL’s Interior Architecture Program isn’t just about color choices and furnishings. It is about learning how to be greener, lower your environmental impact, recycle and re-use. Senior interior architecture students recently got to show off what they’ve learned at a recent home show when they were invited to design two rooms in the show’s Sustainable Design Gallery.

Looking for the best place to park for Thunder Over Louisville April 12? Park at the First and Main Street Garage and enjoy access to the UofL Cressman Center for Visual Arts 3 p.m.-midnight; there will be burgers, hotdogs and light refreshments. Mint Jubilee Gala, Louisville. Tickets for the gala, which benefits the James Graham Brown Cancer Center at UofL and Gilda's Club Louisville, are available for $500 per person. The May 2 formal event features a red carpet entrance, cocktail reception, gourmet dinner and an evening of live music and dancing.
