August is UofL vs. UK Blood Donor Challenge month

Save a life and help UofL reign supreme over UK! Kentucky residents have until Aug. 28 to participate in the annual UofL vs. UK Blood Donor Challenge. The friendly rivalry continues, and once again fans and alumni can vote for their favorite team when they donate blood. To participate, find an American Red Cross or Kentucky Blood Center blood drive in your area and tell them your vote is for UofL. You'll receive a commemorative t-shirt and will be entered into special drawings.

 
 
 
 

Tailgate before the UofL vs. UK game Aug. 31

The Cardinals and the Wildcats will face each other at Papa John's Cardinal Stadium Saturday, Aug. 31, 3:30 p.m. kickoff. Starting three hours before the game, come out to Jim Patterson Stadium for the Liberty Mutual UofL Alumni Association's Tailgate Central. There will be $1 drinks and hotdogs, a rock climbing wall, music, inflatable obstacle course and cornhole games.

 
 
 
 

Ramsey to give State of the University Address Sept. 9

UofL President James Ramsey will deliver his annual State of the University address Tuesday, Sept. 9, 3:30 p.m. at Margaret Comstock Concert Hall in the School of Music. At this time, he will look back at the past year and share the university's vision for the future. All alumni, friends, faculty, staff and students are invited to attend.

 
 
 
 

Birth Defects Center receives grant for research

UofL researchers will seek new solutions for the prevention of birth defects, thanks to $10.3 million in grants from the National Institutes of Health. Research focuses on unlocking the mechanisms behind infertility and birth defects, including spina bifida, spinal cord abnormalities, smoking-related mental and physical defects and cleft palate.

 
 
 
 

UofL fares well in 'Great Colleges' survey

UofL placed at the top in seven categories of "Great Colleges to Work for 2008," a new survey conducted by The Chronicle of Higher Education. UofL ranked among the top five schools of its size for internal communications; professional/career development; confidence in senior leadership; tenure clarity and process; tuition reimbursement; perception and confidence in fair treatment; and career development, research and scholarship.

 
 
 
 

UofL to create 'college town' north of Belknap Campus

Development Map

UofL has signed a deal with a developer to create a "college town" student neighborhood north of Belknap Campus. The developer, Edwards Companies of Columbus, Ohio, is building The Province on a 43-acre site off Shipp Avenue. The residential community will include 522 one- to four-bedroom apartments, a clubhouse, swimming pool, volleyball court and sundeck.

 
 
 
 

Energy audit could save 33 million dollars

A massive energy audit at UofL is expected to lead to energy savings of more than $33 million by 2020. UofL and Siemens Building Technologies announced July 16 a plan to execute a 12-year contract to help the university trim its energy use through equipment upgrades and better systems for controlling the use of electricity, water and other resources.

 
 
 
 

School of Nursing, OMHS to offer degree in Owensboro

The UofL School of Nursing and Owensboro Medical Health System are partnering to help address the nursing shortage by offering a baccalaureate nursing program in Owensboro. The program is intended to graduate 36 to 40 students annually. Demand for nurses is growing at 2-3 percent each year, according to the American Association of Colleges of Nursing.
