Largest gift in UofL history to benefit Brown Cancer Center

UofL received the largest gift in its history: a $20 million donation to help recruit top-level physician-researchers to the James Graham Brown Cancer Center. The gift, announced in November, is from the James Graham Brown Foundation and will be paid over five years. In the last two decades, the foundation has given over $60 million to the cancer center.

 
 
 
 

2009 Grawemeyer Award winners named this week

Grawemery medal

A composer whose concerto pays homage to letter writing and a political scientist who has analyzed corruption are among the winners of the 2009 Grawemeyer Awards. The $200,000 international prizes, awarded annually by UofL and Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary, recognize outstanding works and ideas in music, world order, psychology, education and religion. The winners will visit Louisville in the spring to give free public talks.

 
 
 

Autism raffle to send winner to Big East basketball tourney

With UofL basketball great Darrell Griffith as spokesperson, a local organization is holding a raffle to benefit autism. The Go Cards! Big East Basketball Tournament Raffle prize includes four tournament tickets, four seats on UofL President Jim Ramsey’s flight to New York, two rooms at the Marriott Marquis on Times Square and $1,000. Chances are $20. Proceeds support UofL's new Autism Center and the Families for Effective Autism Treatment (FEAT of Louisville) scholarship fund.

 
 
 
 

Alumni Association offers Personal Development Series

These days, many of us would like a little expert help with making the right decisions when it comes to financial planning, career paths, education and health. The Alumni Association is offering free workshops and has recruited UofL professors, alumni and other experts to lead four-week sessions starting in January. Choose from four tracks: financial planning, career development, continuing education or health.

 
 
 

UofL to receive funds for park improvements

UofL will receive $1.6 million from the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet and a 20 percent match from the UofL Foundation to improve two of its parks on Third Street. The money will be used to build a pedestrian crosswalk intersecting Freedom Park and expand bike pathways, pedestrian cardiopaths and traffic-calming measures at Stansbury Park. But there’s more to the project than improvements. An educational component at Freedom Park will highlight Kentucky's role in civil rights.

 
 
 

Energetic student video wins first UofL weROCK iMovie Fest

UofL's first weROCK iMovie Fest ended Nov. 13 with an Academy Awards-like celebration at its Rauch Planetarium. The campuswide video competition charged teams of two to five students to create a film no longer than five minutes about UofL student life using iMovie software. "ULinMotions," a time-lapsed look at life around UofL’s Belknap Campus, received first place. Download the winning video.

 

UofL doctors achieve cardiovascular first at Jewish Hospital

UofL surgeons at Jewish Hospital have implanted a HeartWare ventricular assist system in a 49-year-old man with heart failure, becoming the second group in the nation and the first in Kentucky to do so as part of a clinical trial. The device is designed to be implanted in the chest, avoiding the abdominal surgery usually required for other devices.

 
 
   
 

Speed team tops mini-Baja nighttime endurance race

UofL engineering students bested their competitors in a four-hour endurance race for mini-Baja vehicles Nov. 8. The UofL student chapter of the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) was host to the event called Midnight Mayhem. UofL’s No. 30 car topped the 16-car field, while the UofL No. 19 car placed within the top 10. Eleven universities took part in the event, which organizers think is the first nighttime race in the 30-year history of mini-Baja racing.

   
 

A&S announces newest Hall of Honor inductees

 

The College of Arts and Sciences recently announced the most recent inductees into its Hall of Honor: philosophy professor emeritus Charles Breslin, former A&S dean Lois Cronholm, world-renowned ornithologist Burt Monroe and former political science chair Paul Weber. Volleyball earns 19th NCAA bid, will face Purdue

 

The UofL volleyball team drew Purdue in the first round of the NCAAs and will play Friday at 6:30 p.m. in West Lafayette. It is the 19th NCAA appearance and the 11th straight for the 19-10 Cardinals, who will face the No. 10 ranked Boilermakers, who post a 24-8 record.

   
 
   
 

'Pack the house' for women's basketball vs. UK Dec. 14

 

UofL is hoping to have a "red out" with a full house at the women's basketball game against Kentucky Sunday, Dec. 14, at 2 p.m. at Freedom Hall. All fans are encouraged to wear red in support of the team. Tickets are $5, or $3 for under 18.

   
 
   
 

Tickets available to men's basketball in December

 

The UofL Athletics Department has tickets available for two men's basketball games this month. On Thursday, Dec. 18, the team will take on Ole Miss in Cincinnati, and on Saturday, Dec. 20, it will meet Minnesota in Phoenix. 502-852-5151.

Dance Academy performs 'Clara's Dream' this weekend

The UofL Dance Academy will perform its holiday classic "Clara's Dream" Dec. 5-6 at 7 p.m. and a Saturday matinee at 3 p.m. The ballet is the familiar story of "The Nutcracker" from the time that Clara starts dreaming of the Land of Sweets with Cotton Candy Angels and Toy Soldiers, variations from foreign lands and the Sugar Plum Fairy. Handcrafted clay sale at UofL benefits students

Handcrafted clay items will be sold at UofL's annual ceramics sale Dec. 12-13. Prices will range from $5 to $100 and proceeds provide money for student travel to national art conferences and free public workshops. The sale takes place Friday 8 a.m.-8 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at Room 136, Studio Arts Building, Floyd and Warnock streets.
