Governor presents 'worst case' budget for universities

The University of Louisville would have to cut about $25 million from its spending plan for each of the next two years under the budget proposed by Gov. Steve Beshear this week. Beshear proposed a 12-percent cut for universities starting July 1, 2008, on top of a 3 percent cut that he has already ordered for the current fiscal year, 2007-2008. UofL President Jim Ramsey said the cuts would be "devastating" for the university, raising the possibility of double-digit tuition increases and cuts to student and community services.

Afghan children

Three years ago, UofL junior Jessica Riordan was a staff sergeant in the U.S. Air Force stationed in Afghanistan. While there, she developed a relationship with the Afghan people that changed her perception of her role in the military and set her on her present course. "Afghanistan changed my world view in many ways," said the anthropology major. "I think about it daily." Riordan's photographs are on display at Ekstrom Library through Feb. 28.
