"Don't balance the budget on our back." That was one of many similar messages seen on posters and heard chanted in the corridors of the state capitol last week as hundreds of students from eight Kentucky universities gathered for the annual Rally for Higher Education Feb. 20. That urgency was spurred by the state’s recently instituted 3 percent cut and a proposed 12 percent cut for higher education in the coming year. Want to help? A sugar that occurs naturally in the body appears to play a major role in protecting cardiac tissue from damage during a heart attack. Not only that, its protection can be increased easily with drugs, according to a team of researchers at UofL and Johns Hopkins University. The number of heart cells damaged following an actual or simulated heart attack was reduced by up to 35 percent when researchers augmented the amount of N-acetylglucosamine (a sugar) present in the body, said UofL professor Steven Jones. |

Months of preparation paid off for Sigma Kappa sorority and Sigma Chi fraternity March 2 when each claimed first place honors in their divisions at the UofL Fryberger Greek Sing competition and fundraiser. The competition, a 71-year tradition that began with groups singing a cappella on the steps of Grawemeyer Hall, now sees fraternities and sororities focus their creativity into full-scale musical productions complete with elaborate costumes and choreographed dance steps. |

The late College of Business professor John Mead knew how to make the study of economics interesting. He taught for 20 years at UofL before his career was cut short by a debilitating stroke in 1987. "I had economics lessons over the dinner table. Dad would talk about diminishing returns over pizza," remembers his daughter, Ann Mead 75B. Ann recently created a fellowship in honor of her parents. The fellowship will allow graduate nursing students to train in the treatment, prevention and rehabilitation of strokes. Want to help? Give online. |

Dr. Charles R. "Bob" Kaelin says that higher education wasn't a given when he was growing up in southwest Jefferson County. "My father had an eighth grade education and my grandfather finished fourth grade," he said. Kaelin earned three degrees from UofL and went on to a practice as an orthopedic surgeon. He recently gave $500,000 to the School of Medicine to create a modern anatomy laboratory. |
