Cardinals to meet archrival Memphis Oct. 10

This Friday the UofL football Cardinals face archrival Memphis at the Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium at 7 p.m. (CT). Enjoy a fully catered event with hosted bar at the UofL Alumni Association's Tailgate Central, located at the southwest corner of the stadium. Entry to Tailgate Central is $30 per person ($15 for ages 21 and under). Register online

 
 
 
 

UofL gets 13 million for National Children's Study

UofL researchers will take part in the largest government-funded long-term study of environmental and genetic effects on children’s health to be conducted in the United States. The National Institutes of Health announced that UofL will receive a grant of $13.1 million over the next five years as a site in the National Children’s Study. The study will follow 100,000 children from before birth to age 21.

 
 
 
 

Scholar House already has waiting list

Scholar House

Some 300 people are already on a waiting list for Louisville Scholar House, a residential complex west of UofL's Belknap Campus that offers affordable housing, education and child care for unemployed single-parent families. A grand opening took place Oct. 7 for the $15.7 million project, which is a joint effort of Family Scholar House, UofL and the Kentucky Housing Corp.

 
 
 
 

Corbin entrepreneurs give 3 million to College of Business

UofL leaders announced Oct. 2 a $3 million gift to the College of Business that will expand its nationally ranked entrepreneurship program. The gift, made by Corbin, Ky., entrepreneurs Terry and Marion Forcht, is among the largest gifts the college ever has received. The gift creates The Forcht Center for Entrepreneurship.

 
 
 
 

Ramsey outlines plans to take UofL to 2020

UofL Board walking

UofL President James Ramsey talked about the challenges and successes of the past year in his annual State of the University address Sept. 9. He also committed UofL to reach the "double the numbers" goals set by the Council on Postsecondary Education and detailed in the 2020 Plan, UofL’s new strategic business plan.

 
 
 
 

Law allows seniors to donate from IRAs

As part of the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008 (HR 1424) that was signed into U.S. law last week, the IRA Charitable Rollover has been extended to both 2008 and 2009 tax years. This bill allows people over the age of 70-1/2 to donate up to $100,000 from their Individual Retirement Accounts to charities tax-free.

 
 
 
 

UofL earns B- on 'green' report card

For the second year in a row, UofL improved its grade on a "green" report card issued by a non-profit organization that monitors sustainability at colleges and universities. UofL earned an overall grade of B- on the 2009 report card issued recently by Sustainable Endowments Institute of Cambridge, Mass. UofL's grade was the highest of any public university in Kentucky rated on the report card.

 
 
 
 

Volunteers of America of Kentucky honors Ramsey

President James Ramsey was honored in September with the Volunteer Spirit Award presented by Volunteers of America of Kentucky. The organization recognized Ramsey for his leadership in establishing UofL’s Signature Partnership Initiative and for the university’s Cardinal Covenant program.

 
 
 
 

Holiday boutique to benefit Cardinal Athletic Fund Oct. 21

Help UofL student athletes by shopping at the Central Cardinal Club Holiday Boutique on Tuesday, Oct. 21, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the University Club. There will be 28 vendors and 100 silent auction items. Have lunch at the club from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. for $12, or have dinner from 5 to 8 p.m. for $15, accompanied by pianist and UofL student Patrick Henry Hughes.
