Still Dancing! Cards to play in NCAA championship Tuesday

Cardinal women

The Cardinal women have proved their mettle and made history by beating Oklahoma in the Final Four on Sunday. Angel McCoughtry scored 14 of her 18 points in the second half of the April 5 Final Four game and added 11 rebounds, helping the Cardinals crawl out of an early hole to beat the Sooners 61-59. The Cards will take on powerhouse Connecticut April 7 for the NCAA championship title. Tipoff is at 8:30 p.m. (ET, ESPN). HIV prevention drug ready for clinical development

A senior scientist at UofL's James Graham Brown Cancer Center has just published research which could lead to the use of tobacco plants in preventing HIV. Kenneth Palmer, who works at the Owensboro Cancer Research Program, says growing a certain protein in tobacco could offer a low-cost topical gel to prevent the spread of the HIV virus.

 
 
 
 

Dean discusses controversy over neurosurgeons

During a news conference March 19, School of Medicine Dean Edward Halperin explained how the loss of eight faculty members could compromise the operation of University Hospital. The former faculty members--all neurosurgeons--effectively resigned from UofL to work for Norton Healthcare. The university has since learned that the neurosurgeons have agreed to continue to staff the center through May 12.

 
 
 
 

20 Minutes: Senior talks about undergraduate research

Research: it's not just for graduate students. Senior biology major Garrett Roney is one of many undergraduates taking advantage of the opportunity to be involved in research. Park and relax downtown for Thunder and help UofL

Looking for a convenient place to park and relax for Thunder Over Louisville? UofL's Thunder at the Cressman offers parking at the First and Main Street garage and access to the Cressman Center for Visual Arts from 3 p.m. to midnight Saturday, April 18. Water, soda and refreshments will be served. Cost is $20 per adult and $10 for children age 12 and under. Parking passes are an additional $25. Proceeds benefit UofL's Hite Art Institute. Alumni clubs have Derby parties throughout the country

What do UofL alumni miss most when they leave Kentucky? Derby! UofL alumni clubs throughout the country will be host to Derby parties May 2 for homesick alumni and friends. Participating clubs include those in Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, Memphis, Phoenix, St. Louis, Tampa Bay and Gainesville. The events raise money for student scholarships. UofL class designs green dorm room

green dorm room

Lofted beds. Cork flooring. Indoor plants. They're part of the decorating scheme for what may become the first green dorm room at UofL. Ten students in Jamie Horwitz's Sustainable Architecture course, a three-hour seminar in art history, designed the room this semester after Arts and Sciences Dean Blaine Hudson came up with a $5,000 grant for the project.

 
 
 
 

Axton Festival of Film and Verse has student, guest work

The premiere of films using UofL students' poems is among highlights for this year's Axton Festival of Film and Verse titled "The Soul that Grows in Darkness." Festivities will open with poetry readings by Pleaides journal editor Wayne Miller and Michigan Quarterly Review editor Larry Goldstein at 7:30 p.m. April 9 in Ekstrom Library's Bingham Poetry Room. The free activities continue April 9-11 and 21.

 
 
 
 

Nobel laureate to open Chamblin Memorial Lecture series

Nobel Prize-winning physicist Frank Wilczek will be the inaugural speaker for UofL's Andrew Chamblin Memorial Lecture series April 16, sponsored by the physics and astronomy department. Wilczek, a physics professor at MIT, is author of several books, including The Lightness of Being: Mass, Ether and the Unification of Forces. He will sign his books after the 7:30 p.m. lecture, to take place at the Gheens Science Hall and Rauch Planetarium. Admission is free.

UofL spring football scrimmage and tailgate party April 17

Get a sneak peek of the football team at the annual spring scrimmage at Papa John's Cardinal Stadium on Friday, April 17. Before the 7:30 p.m. kickoff, enjoy a free tailgate at Jim Patterson Baseball Stadium, Third Street and Central Avenue. The tailgate starts at 4:30 p.m. and features $1 beer and hotdogs, raffles and games. Admission to both events is free.

 
 
 
 

No. 16 softball sweeps Providence 8-0 and 10-3 Sunday

The No. 16/19 UofL softball team picked up its second consecutive Big East Conference sweep April 5 when the host Cards defeated Providence 8-0 and 10-3 at Ulmer Stadium. In game one, junior catcher Melissa Roth went 3 for 3 and scored three runs and junior pitcher Kristen Wadell tossed a two-hit shutout as the Cards defeated the Friars 8-0 in six innings.
