$20 million gift brings renewable energy center to UofL

Kentucky Gov. Steve Beshear and President James Ramsey recently announced the largest private gift in UofL's history. The more than $20 million pledge--from J. B. Speed School of Engineering graduate Henry Conn and his wife, Rebecca (left)--will help fund the Conn Center for Renewable Energy Research and Environmental Stewardship. The state created the center to provide leadership, research, support and policy development in renewable energy.

This spring the center will offer half-day seminars, classes geared especially toward managing strategically in tough times, labor-management seminars and three new seminars. Labor-Management Center offers new business seminars

UofL's Labor-Management Center is offering new business seminars this spring. They include "Restoring Harmony: Going Beyond 'Win-Win,'" Feb. 20, 8:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. The seminar will teach participants to merge the philosophy of Aikido with the lessons of police hostage negotiations. Registration is $195 or $35 for luncheon only. March 6's seminar is on "Mentoring and Coaching Skills for Managers."

Interested in running or walking for general fitness or for mini-marathon training? The UofL Alumni Association and the university's Get Healthy Now program invites runners and walkers of all levels to join a no-cost running club. 'Abe Lincoln and Uncle Tom in the White House' premiere

What advice would the title character of Harriet Beecher Stowe's novel Uncle Tom's Cabin have given to Abraham Lincoln as he pondered the moral and political issue of slavery leading to the Emancipation Proclamation? That question is the basis of Carlyle Brown's play Abe Lincoln and Uncle Tom in the White House, directed by Lundeana Thomas. Productions will be held at The Playhouse Feb. 4-8 at 8 p.m. plus a 3 p.m. matinee Feb. 8. $12.

 
 
 
 

Literature-culture conference to draw authors, scholars

The Louisville Conference on Literature and Culture Since 1900 is expected to draw 600 scholars to UofL Feb. 19-21 for discussions of literary styles from poetry to cinema and novels to criticism. UofL's English and classical and modern languages departments sponsor the annual event. Keynote addresses are free and public.

Football signing party today at 6 p.m.

The UofL football program will host a Signing Day Party Wednesday, Feb. 4, at 6 p.m. on the third floor of the Brown and Williamson Club. Louisville head coach Steve Kragthorpe and his staff will unveil the 2009 recruiting class, show video highlights and give a brief overview of each signee. Doors open at 5:15 p.m. for free food and drinks.

 
 
 
 

Scott accepted to study at Oxford University

Will Scott

UofL basketball player Will Scott is one of only 15 people accepted to participate in a master's degree program in Modern Chinese Studies at Oxford University. Scott, who has a cumulative 3.9 grade point average, will complete his master's in business administration at UofL this summer. He has already earned a bachelor's degree in marketing with a minor in Chinese from UofL.

 
 
 
 

Former UofL athletes compete in "The Amazing Race"

Sisters Jennifer and LaKisha Hoffman, both former UofL athletes, are competitors in CBS's "The Amazing Race 14," which premieres Sunday, Feb. 15, at 8 p.m. ET/PT. Jennifer, a 2006 graduate from the College of Business, was an All-America volleyball player for the Cardinals. Her older sister, LaKisha, was a member of the women's basketball team.

For fans who live and breathe Cardinal basketball, UofL Athletics recently launched UofLArenaSeats.com. The site provides news about the new downtown arena, which will be the home for the men's and women's basketball teams. UofLArenaSeats.com includes a Q&A section, facts and figures, a live web camera of the construction site, seating diagrams, donation levels and timelines.
