Carnegie rates UofL tops in community engagement

The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching recently gave the University of Louisville its highest rating in the area of community engagement. The classification means that UofL has addressed community-identified needs, deepened students' civic and academic learning and enhanced the well-being of the community. Achieving the community engagement designation from Carnegie was one of the goals in UofL's current strategic plan.

2008 Year in review

The University of Louisville entered the year with a brand new look and slogan: It's Happening Here. That three-word phrase turned out to be a fitting description for a wide range of UofL activities and achievements in 2008. In the sixth year of President James Ramsey's leadership, the university logged milestones in student achievement, research and community involvement, and continued to make important contributions to the region's economic well-being and quality of life.

 
 
 
 

2,000 graduate in December 2008

"Pretty good" were the words Todd Givens used to describe how he was feeling a few hours before stepping on stage to receive a degree in mechanical engineering Dec. 18. The youngest of three siblings, Givens is the first in his family to earn a master's degree. Of nearly 2,000 UofL students who graduated in the fall 2008 semester, 700 or so participated in the winter commencement ceremonies.

 
 
 

Physician named one of 20 best family practice residents

Dr. Paul McKee

UofL resident physician Paul McKee has been named one of the most promising young doctors in the United States. McKee is one of only 20 recipients of the Bristol-Myers Squibb Award for Excellence in Graduate Medical Education from the American Academy of Family Physicians. McKee has made medical mission trips to Kenya, Swaziland, Ethiopia and Jamaica. Closer to home, he volunteers as a team physician for a local high school.

 
 
 
 

Arts Academy honors Ramsey

UofL President James Ramsey received the West Louisville Performing Arts Academy (WLPAA) Hope Award at the annual Hope Award Dinner Concert Dec. 11. WLPAA is the umbrella organization for the West Louisville Boys and Girls choirs. The award honors Ramsey's commitment to west Louisville and the university's Signature Partnership initiatives. Since 2001 UofL has provided scholarships to qualifying choir members.

 
 
 
 

Personal development series starts in January

Stressed out? The Alumni Association's Personal Development Series can help. Free workshops are offered in financial planning, career development, continuing education and health. UofL professors, alumni and other experts will lead the four-week sessions, which start in January. RSVP online.

 
 
 

Free tickets to Jan. 11 UofL vs. Rutgers women's basketball game

Women's basketball

UofL hopes to fill Freedom Hall on Sunday, Jan. 11, as the 10th-ranked Cardinal women's basketball team plays No. 17 Rutgers at 2 p.m. The Alumni Association is giving away up to six tickets per person. Also, free ticket vouchers for the game are available by contacting the U of L ticket office at 502-852-5151. Let's fill the house again just like in December, when fans came out in droves! Weekend College brings professors to Naples, FLa.

UofL is taking some of its star faculty on the road to Naples, Fla., Jan. 9. Geographer Keith Mountain will discuss global warming; psychiatry professor Jesse Wright will talk about medical advances that may help individuals who are coping with depression; and President James Ramsey will discuss how UofL is moving ahead despite today's challenging economic environment. Two new entrances to Shelby Campus opened

UofL and city officials took a key step toward the development of Shelbyhurst Research and Office Park on the university's Shelby Campus. President James Ramsey, Louisville Metro Mayor Jerry Abramson and Burt Deutsch, vice chairman of the UofL Foundation, cut ribbons Dec. 17 on two new entrances to Shelby Campus. The entrances and accompanying roadway system are the first steps in development of the park.

Women's basketball: Cards top DePaul in Big East opener

Angel McCoughtry scored 25 points to lead No. 10 Louisville to a 78-60 win over DePaul in both teams' Big East opener on Saturday. It was the seventh time this season that McCoughtry has scored 21 or more.

 
 
 
 

Men's basketball: Cards beat Kentucky in nail-biter

Point guard Edgar Sosa hit a 30-footer with 2.8 seconds left in the game to give the 18th-ranked Cards a 74-71 victory over archrival Kentucky in UofL's final nonconference outing of the season Jan. 4. The shot came after a rally by the Wildcats that tied the game at 71.

 
 
 
 

Two UofL baseball players earn preseason All-America honors

Louisville junior third baseman Chris Dominguez and junior left-handed pitcher Justin Marks have been named to the Ping!Baseball Preseason All-America Team. Dominguez was selected to the first team, while Marks was named to the second team. UofL is ranked No. 8 in the preseason by Collegiate Baseball.

It's not too late to join the UofL Run/Walk Group, which now meets several days a week starting on Mondays in preparation for the 2009 Triple Crown of Running, the Kentucky Derby Festival mini Marathon and Marathon, and UofL's Run for the L of It and Champions 4 Her (events in March and April).
