Ramsey says education is key for region to prosper

Higher education is the key ingredient for Kentucky and southern Indiana to prosper in the 21st century. That’s what University of Louisville President James Ramsey told more than 200 business and community leaders at a conference June 2. Ramsey was co-host to the WIRED65 and HIRED Education Forum at UofL. WIRED65’s goal is to bring together leaders from 26 counties near Louisville and Interstate 65 to plot a regional strategy for economic development and growth.

 
 
 
 

Office of Military and Veterans Services to open in fall

Military veterans and active service personnel will find it a little bit easier to attend UofL thanks to a new office designed to better meet their needs. The Office of Military and Veterans Services will open this fall. At least 600 UofL students are veterans, and the university expects by fall to have 750, said director Joe Dablow (left) at a May 26 press conference. View the announcement on YouTube.

 
 
 
 

School of Medicine hires nine neurosurgeons

The School of Medicine announced May 8 that it has hired nine board-certified neurosurgeons as faculty for the Department of Neurosurgery, including one who will serve as interim department chair and as director for the neurosurgery residency program. Their hiring means that the UofL Level 1 Trauma Center will continue to operate without interruption. Watch the press conference (Windows Media Player).

 
 
 
 

New international adoption clinic focuses on medical needs

Adoption

The UofL Department of Pediatrics has started a clinic to help parents navigate the medical aspects of adopting a child from a foreign country. "Health risks vary from country to country," explained pediatrician Mike Howard, clinic director. "Many people want to know what problems they'll face as adoptive parents so they can prepare for their child’s unique challenges."

 
 
 
 

UofL to help Kentucky prepare for future pandemics

UofL has received a $2.3 million federal grant to help communities across the state prepare for possible future pandemics. The National Institute for Hometown Security grant, which was announced at a press conference May 27, will fund five collaborative research projects aimed at detection, preparedness, protection, response and recovery involving future disease outbreaks.

 
 
 
 

University Hospital opens critical care stroke unit

UofL stroke unit

University Hospital Stroke Center opened a new critical care unit May 14. The new six-bed unit will complement advances the center's Stroke Team has made in cutting the time between the onset of stroke symptoms and treatment.

 
 
 
 

Gray Street Farmers' Market to open June 4

The School of Public Health and Information Sciences is co-hosting a new farmers' market on Thursdays. The Gray Street Farmers' Market will be open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. every Thursday June 4-Oct. 29 on the 400 block of East Gray Street, between South Preston and South Jackson streets. The goal of this new market, which has 18 vendors, is to increase access to fresh, locally grown food in the downtown area.

 
 
 
 

UofL offers pre-med certificate for career changers

Would you like to become a physician but don't have the prerequisites to apply to medical school? The UofL School of Medicine and College of Arts and Sciences offer a new post-bachelor's pre-medical certificate program for career changers with bachelor's degrees who lack pre-med requirements. Application deadline is July 1.

 
 
 
 

UofL's employee health management program is paying off

UofL's efforts to improve employee health and cut health care costs are paying off. The Health Fitness Corp. notes in a recent briefing paper that UofL's Get Healthy Now health management program has a 2.67 return on investment. That means for every dollar the university spends on the program, it realizes a savings of $2.67.

Champions4Her

A June 20 local 5K walk and run will benefit UofL's Women's Athletics and nine other community organizations. In its second year, Champions4Her intends not only to raise money but also to raise awareness of economic, health, social and other issues that affect women.

Baseball team wins NCAA regionals, heads to super regionals

Cardinals win Regionals

The Cardinals beat Vanderbilt to earn the NCAA Regional Championships June 1. The 12th-ranked Louisville (47-16) will face Cal State Fullerton in a best-of-three series with the winner advancing to the College World Series. The Cardinals and Titans (45-14) will open their series at Goodwin Field on Friday at 10:30 p.m. ET on ESPN2, while Saturday's game is set for 5 p.m. ET on ESPN. If necessary, Sunday's game will start at 10 p.m. ET and be televised back on ESPN2.

 
 
 
 

Track and field to send record 12 athletes to nationals

The men's and women's track and field teams secured eight at-large bids and will have a school-record 12 athletes competing at the 2009 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships June 10-13. The championship will take place at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, Ark.

 
 
 
 

Softball outfielder named Academic All-American

Kristi Cunningham

Senior outfielder Kristi Cunningham was selected to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America third team. She carried a 3.83 GPA in exercise science/pre-nursing and anchored down centerfield for the past four seasons while serving as team captain for the past two years.
