Grawemeyer winners are on campus this week

Grawemeyer Award

Recipients of the 2009 Grawemeyer Awards are on campus this week to discuss their winning works and ideas at free public talks. Most talks are March 4 and 5. The music winner will speak March 12. The Grawemeyer prizes, five awards of $200,000 each, are given annually for outstanding ideas or works in music composition, world order, psychology, education and religion. Ramsey, Willihnganz talk about UofL's economic impact

UofL President James Ramsey, Provost Shirley Willihnganz, student Rudy Spencer and others took part in a panel discussion at the Top Investors Series of Greater Louisville Inc. Feb. 26. They discussed UofL's strategic plan, its economic development role in Louisville and in Kentucky, and ways that the business community can partner with the university. Watch the video.

 
 
 
 

World's first cardiac adult stem cell trial will be in Louisville

The world's first phase one FDA-approved clinical trial using adult cardiac stem cells to treat heart disease will be conducted by a team of UofL doctors at Jewish Hospital. For the first time, adult patients with advanced heart disease who are scheduled to undergo bypass surgery will be recruited for participation in the clinical trial, which uses stem cells taken from the patient's own cardiac tissue.

 
 
 
 

New supercomputer to advance UofL's research

UofL's new supercomputer

UofL "powered up" the most powerful academic high-performance computing system in Kentucky in February. The supercomputer, nicknamed the Cardinal Research Cluster (CRC), has a peak speed of more than 25 teraflops (trillion calculations per second). CRC will be used to solve complex problems in areas such as cancer research, materials science, atmospheric modeling, visualization and bioinformatics.

 
 
 
 

Speed School helps introduce engineering to kids

Children leanr about engineering

When should children be introduced to the idea of engineering as a profession? The sooner the better, says Speed School of Engineering Dean Mickey Wilhelm. Wilhelm and Jefferson County Public School officials joined QK4 Engineering President David Smith Feb. 17 to announce that Smith's Louisville-based company was added as a business partner in expanding the Engineering Is Elementary program at Wheeler Elementary.

 
 
 
 

Bourbon tasting and School of Music Concert March 9

Come out for a complimentary bourbon tasting and concert, hosted by the UofL Alumni Association and UofL School of Music. Premium Whiskey Ambassador Jed Schneider will host an informal bourbon tasting in room 267 of the School of Music at 7 p.m. Light refreshments will be served. Following this, enjoy an 8 p.m. concert presented by the School of Music and the Marilyn Horne Foundation featuring Weston Hurt (baritone) with Miah Im (piano). RSVP online.

 
 
 
 

Arts and culture partnership unites UofL, local nonprofits

UofL and area nonprofit organizations announced the creation of the new Arts and Culture Partnerships Initiative in February. The initiative is designed to bring together arts, history and cultural institutions to enhance community life. UofL's Peter Morrin (former director of the Speed Art Museum), who is spearheading the effort, shares the details in "20 Minutes with Peter Morrin."

 
 
 
 

School of Music to perform at Carnegie Hall April 1 and 3

The School of Music students and faculty will perform in two concerts at Carnegie Hall in New York City this spring. On April 1 the UofL Wind Ensemble will perform at 8 p.m. in Stern Auditorium at Carnegie Hall as the invited guest ensemble of the New York Band and Orchestra Festival. Two days later, UofL classical guitar professor Stephen Mattingly will perform an 8 p.m. concert as a member of the Tantalus Guitar Quartet in Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall. Tickets are available through the Carnegie Hall Box Office.

McCoughtry sets new Big East mark

McCoughtry

For the third straight year Louisville women’s All-American basketball player Angel McCoughtry finished atop the Big East statistics in scoring, rebounding and steals. The senior is the first player in Big East history to do this. McCoughtry finished her final year in the Big East averaging 26.6 points, 10.0 rebounds and 4.8 steals per game.

 
 
 
 

Women's Big East Tournament and reception March 8

The Cardinal women’s basketball team is heading to New Haven, Conn., to compete in the Big East Tournament March 6-10, with its first game on Sunday, March 8, at 6 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on ESPNU. Are you following the Cardinal women's team to Hartford for the Women's Big East Tournament? UofL is hosting a complimentary reception March 8 for UofL alumni and friends.
