UofL commencement ceremony to be May 9

More than 1,000 students are expected to participate in UofL's main commencement ceremony May 9 at 1 p.m. in Freedom Hall. UofL expects to award about 3,200 degrees this semester. This year’s student speaker is J.B. Speed School of Engineering student Boris Chernomordik, whose awards include the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and UofL Grawemeyer Scholarship. The main commencement address will be livestreamed.

 
 
 
 

UofL announces 7 new Fulbright scholars

Monica Marks

Monica Marks (left) will study Turkish law and politics in Turkey next year as a Fulbright scholar. She is one of six UofL seniors and one alumnus who recently received the award. Since 2003 UofL students and alumni have won 34 Fulbright awards, more than any other Kentucky university. The federally sponsored program provides grants to scholars in 155 nations based on academic merit and leadership potential.

 
 
 
 

Faculty honored for teaching and scholarship

Robert Powers

Math isn’t always a student’s favorite subject. But even students who go mentally kicking and screaming into a required math course taught by UofL professor Robert Powers come out liking math and praising their teacher. Powers received a Distinguished Faculty Award for teaching. He was one of 14 faculty members honored at the annual Celebration for Faculty Excellence in April. Find out who else won.

UofL has crafted a strategy to capitalize on the opportunities detailed in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (commonly referred to as the economic stimulus package) and has made this available online. This special section of UofL's website outlines the university's strategy and seeks your input. Program prepares future medical students for success

Medical success

The university's Guaranteed Entrance to Medical School program attracts Kentucky's top high school seniors who want to become doctors. It's a program that's working. Of the students who go through the program, 75 percent typically enter medical school, and 95 percent of these finish their medical training at UofL.

 
 
 
 

Sculpture reminds students of importance of integrity

The new black granite sculpture at the J.B. Speed School of Engineering makes a striking first impression on those entering the school. But Bernie Dahlem, the engineering alumnus who was a driving force behind the sculpture "Integrity," wants it to have a lasting impression on those leaving. The 6-by-8-foot sculpture is a fabrication of the “bent,” the official symbol of the national honor society Tau Beta Pi.

 
 
 
 

Alumni Association has plenty of events in May

Start your summer right by attending some of the exciting events sponsored by the Alumni Association. Events include "Grilling Out for Singles" and "Cooking for One or Two" cooking classes, the annual Run for the "L" of It 5K Walk/Run, a Day at the Races at Churchill Downs, receptions with President James Ramsey and several deans and the Alumni Association's first-ever Bourbon Bus Tour. U.S. Chief Justice John Roberts visits UofL

U.S. Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. visited UofL April 17 and 18 as a guest of the McConnell Center for Political Leadership. Roberts met with UofL trustees, McConnell Scholars and guests at a reception April 17. He met again with McConnell Scholars on April 18 and spoke to a gathering of about 900 people in UofL’s Cardinal Arena about his role as top justice on the Supreme Court.View the photo gallery.

 
 
 
 

Report identifies city's biggest greenhouse gas producers

If you think that businesses and industry are the biggest greenhouse gas producers in Louisville Metro, think again. A report released April 22 by Louisville’s Partnership for a Green City identifies homes and vehicles as the worst offenders, accounting for about 60 percent of the city’s GHG emissions. The partnership, an initiative of UofL, Louisville Metro Government and Jefferson County Public Schools, launched five years ago to protect the local environment.

 
 
 
 

Physics and astronomy opens new atmospheric science lab

Tornadoes, hurricanes, cold fronts, warm fronts. In the weather-rich Louisville area one may only have to walk outside to experience such weather phenomena. Now students in the Department of Physics and Astronomy have a new place to study weather and air pollution with the April 16 opening of the new atmospheric science research and instructional lab. Conference to examine Louisville before the Civil War

A contemporary look at many facets of antebellum Louisville will be the focus of "Land, River and Peoples: Louisville Before the Civil War." The May 29-30 conference, hosted by UofL, will cover such topics as Louisville politics and leading families, the Portland Canal during the steamboat era, the underground railroad, domestic workers’ class and gender issues, multiculturalism and music, minstrel shows and showboats, women’s lives in early Kentucky and Louisville’s free African American community.

UofL hosts 2008 Big East Softball Championship May 7-9

Women's softball

This weekend UofL's Ulmer Stadium will host the 2008 Big East Softball Championships. The tournament begins May 7 with a 10 a.m. game, and No. 3 seed Louisville will face No. 6 seed Connecticut at 6:30 p.m. that evening. All-session tickets are $15 for adults or $5 per session. Seniors age 55 or older and children under age 12 pay $9 for all sessions or $3 per session. UofL students are free.

 
 
 
 

Women's track and field team wins Big East championship

Outdoor Championship

The UofL women's track and field team battled through the elements May 3, the final day of the 2009 Big East Outdoor Championships at Villanova Stadium, to earn its second consecutive conference team title, while the men finished in second behind Notre Dame by half a point. The Louisville women finished with a total of 138 points to win their second consecutive team title.

 
 
 
 

Golf teams earn NCAA regional championship bids

The Cardinal men's and women's golf teams will compete in the NCAA regional championships this month. The women earned a No. 5 seed and will compete May 7-9 at the Scarlet Course in Columbus, Ohio. The men earned a No. 8 seed and will compete at The Club at Olde Stone in Bowling Green, Ky., May 14-16.
