Alumnus Dujuan Thomas proves leadership is built over time

University of Louisville alumnus Dujuan Thomas '21 has built a career spanning public service, military service and entertainment. Along the way, he became the youngest city commissioner in Paducah's history.

Thomas graduated from UofL in 2021 with a degree in communication, but his story starts in a small city in Kentucky called Paducah. Thomas attended Paducah Tilghman High School and decided to serve his country before graduating. At 17 years old, he enlisted in the Army National Guard.

Thomas's journey at the university began in 2016, where he said his college experience was anything but "traditional." He had to juggle school, military service, work, and the pressures that come with being a young adult. Yet, he still reflects on his time at his alma mater positively.  

"Some of my strongest memories from UofL are the friendships I made and the people I met along the way," Thomas said. "Those relationships exposed me to different backgrounds, ideas and perspectives while helping me grow personally."

His studies in communication became directly relevant to the fields Thomas pursued during his adult life: public service and entertainment.  

" Learning how to understand audiences, communicate effectively, present ideas clearly, and connect with people from different backgrounds has served me whether I am speaking with constituents, participating in a public meeting, interviewing someone on television, or working in front of a camera," Thomas said.

At only 21 years old, Thomas ran for mayor of Paducah. Although he did not win, Thomas described the campaign as one of the most formative experiences of his career. It taught him how to communicate with those of different backgrounds, handle criticism, remain committed to a goal, and strengthen his understanding of local government.

Thomas did not let the loss deter him. He continued public service and was elected to the Paducah City Commission at 26 years old.  

“For me, that victory was especially meaningful because it came five years after my first campaign for mayor," Thomas said. "It was a reminder that an early loss does not have to define the rest of your story.”

Thomas's professional interests extend beyond government, and his background in communication acts as a bridge between both sides of his career.

"I have appeared in films, national commercials, and television shows, and I have also hosted my own television talk show, Dujuan Thomas Live, on Channel 2 in my region," he said. "In 2025, I was featured on Guts & Glory, a reality competition series from The Walking Dead executive producer and director Greg Nicotero that aired on AMC+."

Education remains a priority for Thomas. He is currently pursuing a Doctor of Public Administration degree at Liberty University and still views his time at UofL as a defining part of his story. The education, experiences, and friendships he gained at UofL helped lay the foundation for the public servant, communicator and leader he is today.
